Jon Ward Beyle:
An eighth-generation native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Jon Ward Beyle has been musically inspired by his homeland his entire life. To the west he heard earthy, folk Mountain music and to the east he heard Carolina beach music. Nestled in the middle, just outside of the University town, Beyle came of age in this creative, down-home, intellectual hotbed. First taking up guitar and drums, while also dabbling in piano, Beyle eventually found his way to the banjo, the instrument that led him to a world of old-time, folk, bluegrass, and Americana music.
Beyle’s debut EP Holding Hope, released in October 2019, blends these genres through his empathetic and transparent songwriting. Driving banjo, honest lyrics, and a powerful, convincing voice, come together to make a sound that cuts to the bone. Live performances range from a stomp-and-holler bluegrass hootenanny to an intimate mining of the soul that brings Beyle and the audience into one being.
Early 2021 found Beyle stepping into the studio once again, this time to record his first full-length album set to be released in the latter half of the year. Armed with an eclectic mix of heartfelt songs and a backing band of strong local musicians, this album is set to bring Beyle into the folk-rock spotlight.
Beyle is also the host of the weekly live music series Beer & Banjos in Carrboro, NC. The series, housed by the community bar, 401 Main, highlights traditional and acoustic music from the state of North Carolina.
To listen to his music is to hear a friend grieve, wonder, anger, and celebrate. To see him live is to experience this spectrum of emotions together through the craft of a natural performer who wants to connect and learn from the people that music puts in his path. Buy his music or find him on the road to hear and feel this connection.
