Mole School: 6.5% A throwback to a classic West Coast IPA.
Jolly Elf: 8.9% Malt forward and 8.9% ABV for warmth, with holiday spices and tart cherry. The new brew will be released this year in 22oz bottles as well as on draft in the tasting room, at Sour Barn, and other restaurants and bottle shops around town.
Turtle Tinsel: 7% Celebrate the holidays with their take on a Christmas Ale. Bright ginger and cinnamon marry with sweet, local hone from Shaken Creek Farms to create a cozy brew that’s just perfect for your holiday oyster roast or family get-together. (We think Santa would prefer it to milk & cookies.)
Roadside Prophet: 8.9% An imperial stout with chilies, cocoa nibs, vanilla, and cinnamon. Now available in 16oz cans.
Tangerine Reaper Wilmywood Wit: 5.3% A Belgian-inspired witbier infused with pureed tangerines and carolina reaper pepper!
Donkey Thunder: 6.4% West Coast IPA brewed and dry hopped with Topaz; piney, resinous and slightly dank with subtle hints of citrus fruits.

Triple Chocolate Porter: 7.31% American porter with robust chocolate flavors. Made with cocoa powder and bakers chocolate, conditioned on organic Ghanaian cocoa nibs. Medium bodied with a super smooth and balanced finish!
Smoked Oyster Porter: 5.8% A smooth and smoky porter brewed with Middle Sound Mariculture oysters.
Black River Oatmeal Stout: 7% Pure, delicious darkness. This silky-soft oatmeal stout glides across the palate like liquid midnight: delicious dark chocolate, bittersweet coffee and cream, graceful noble hops, and a long fade to black.
They Came from Above: 6% Dry-hopped with Strata and Cascade. Notes of mango, peach and pine.
Cut ‘Em to Pieces: 5.8% A crisp pale ale brewed with tangerines.
Intracoastal Waterhaze: 4.2% The newest hazy IPA has a tropical aroma with notes of citrus and pine. The resinous mouthfeel provides flavors found in an American IPA, but without the high alcohol bite. Azacca and Ekuanot hops are responsible for the unique balance of fruity and herbal flavors.

Thanksgiving Local Beer & Food Pairings
Thanksgiving is a classically stressful one for the people planning the meal. From making sure you have enough chairs, plates, and silverware, down to wondering creating the oven schedule there are a lot of moving parts. One thing you don’t need to worry about this year is figuring out which beers to pair with each part of your meal—we did that for you.
We’ve taken five classic dishes and paired them up with five local beers that are available either by can, growler, or crowler.
A note on my personal approach to pairing: I like to find flavors that complement each other, rather than going with the same-same approach. You might find that some of these might not make sense in your brain. That’s okay! While I do recommend you try things that you wouldn’t typically, you don’t have to! That’s the beauty of beer pairings.

Turkey & Salty Turtle Beer Company Yam On It:
STBC’s Yam On It is a new brew for the Surf City brewery. It features bold flavors of sweet marshmallow, aromatic baking spices, and earthy sweet potatoes. (Yeah, yeah they know sweet potatoes & yams aren’t the same thing.) I think this pairs up real pretty with the traditional savory herbs and spices used in our Thanksgiving bird—the turkey.
Cranberry Sauce & Flying Machine Brewing Company Landbier Lager:
Cranberry sauce tends to lean sweet & tangy, so I thought something soft, but complex would make a nice partner. Meet Landbier Lager from Flying Machine: its delicate, floral nature is an excellent balance to the bright, zippy cranberry sauce.
Mashed Potatoes & Flytrap Brewing Cranberry Saison:
Here we let Belgian phenolics (clove & white pepper) marry up with tangy, earthy cranberries to level out the richness of creamy, buttery mashed potatoes. Or if someone made them wrong, then lumpy, buttery mashed potatoes. Either way, Flytrap’s Cranberry Saison will pair perfectly.
Green Bean Casserole & Mad Mole/Wilmington Brewing Company Mole Money Mole Problems:
Green Bean casserole is the richest of the rich, so take the edge off with a brand new IPA from two Wilmington breweries. Bitter, fruity hops will surely elevate the creamy mushroom & green beans.
Pumpkin Pie & Front Street Brewery Black River Oatmeal Stout:
Peanut butter & jelly. Mashed potatoes & gravy. Pie & stout. It’s a no-brainer of a pairing. FSB’s velvety Black River Oatmeal Stout finishes with the perfect amount of bitterness to wash down Aunt Karen’s famous pumpkin pie.

Mole Money Mole Problems: 7.1% 40 IBUs A blend of Australian and American hops provides a velvety mouthfeel surrounded by fruity and juicy aromas with a hint of dankness.
Poets and Fools: 5.3% A lager beer in a classic American Pils style brewed with single source American 2-row pilsner malt and Hallertauer hops. Pretty crispy with some punchy balanced bitterness and a spicy/floral aroma.
Rye IPA: 7% Head brewer Dani says, “Return of the Rye IPA, our seasonal IPA for cooler weather, 7.0% abv. Both silky and bold, smashable but bitter, with a well rounded note of spice from a generous portion of Rye malt.”
Oryaza Sativa: 6.5% IPA brewed with a high percentage of rice to develop a very dry, crisp beer. Hop explosions from: Zeus, Centennial, Cascade, Simcoe, and Citra.

If you don’t recognize Kelly Pickle (yes, that is her real name) then you really need to go visit Salty Turtle Beer Company up in Surf City. She’s been there slingin’ tasty Hey Zay Hazy IPAs and Swingbridge Breakfast Stouts since day ONE! I was excited to interview her for the Ale Trail because I’ve had the honor of tending bar with her for the past six months; she did not disappoint.
Ale Trail (AT): What’s your favorite thing about bartending?
Kelly Pickle (KP): My favorite thing about bartending is meeting new and interesting people every single day. I love building relationships with guests from near and far!
AT: Do you have any advice for current or future craft beer bartenders?
KP: My advice to craft beer bartenders is to learn your audience. Honing in on what types of beers your guests like, as well as their experience in the craft beer world, will help make their trip to your venue an unforgettable one.
AT: If you were a beer, which one would you be?
KP: If I were a beer I would choose a New England IPA: unfiltered, slightly sweet and slightly bitter. *wink*
